Science, consumerism, and collectivity: these are beliefs, movements, or ideologies that offer people a sense of grounding. But what happens when we cling so tightly to a belief that it becomes an untouchable truth, a sacred cow (“Heilig Huisje”)? “Heilige Huisjes” can both divide and unite.
Kunstliefde and FAAM present the sixth edition of the pop-up exhibition UtrechtDownUnder: Heilige Huisjes. In November and December 2024, seven artists and two researchers will offer their perspectives on “Heilige Huisjes” (sacred cows). The exhibition’s landing place is a sacred house of stone: the Doopsgezinde (Mennonite) Church on the Oudegracht in Utrecht.
During Advent, a period of longing for connection, the Doopsgezinde Church opens its doors to art, science, and dialogue. Discover in this remarkable space the work of five Utrecht-based artists (and collectives) from a wide range of disciplines:
Freija Broeren
Joey Streppel
Karenina van den Crommenacker
KATPATAT
Amy Vriend
Additionally, two artist-researcher duos have created brand-new works inspired by the significance of beliefs and ideologies in relation to society, past and present. The Doopsgezinde Church serves as a fascinating, living archive for this exploration. UtrechtDownUnder presents fresh perspectives from:
Lenke Duyvendak (artist) and Răzvan Iulian Rusu (art historian)
Sophie Fabre (artist) and Rick Robben (philosopher of science)
Sacred Cows does not engage in ideological battles but rather invites open conversation. How do we move from division toward connection?
